Court Mandates Police Compensation Of N3m To Family Of Slain Rivers DPO

In a recent ruling, the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has directed the Nigeria Police to compensate Eze Ekpeye Logbo, Kelvin Anugwo, with the sum of N3 million. Anugwo was unlawfully detained for over 82 days in connection with the death of the late Ahoada Divisional Police officer, SP Bako Ambgashim. Presided over by Justice A.M. Oriye, the court also mandated the police to issue a public apology to Anugwo in a national newspaper for violating his fundamental rights.

Furthermore, the court issued an injunction preventing the police from making any further arrests, threats, or harassment against Anugwo regarding the death of SP Ambgashim. An additional N200,000 was awarded to Anugwo for the breach of his fundamental human rights.

Reacting to the verdict, Ikashi Saturday-Emehi, counsel to the monarch, hailed the judgment as “justice for the Ekpeye people.”

The late SP Ambgashim was murdered in Ahoada East Local Government Area of the state by suspected cultists. He was reportedly ambushed while returning from an operation. The police had vowed to apprehend his killers, leading to the arrest of several suspects, including the traditional ruler. However, the court later acquitted many of the arrested suspects.
