Speaking at the official inauguration of the committee convened by the Political Commission of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and other stakeholders in Abuja, Umar, a former NLC president, stated that the committee’s establishment marked the resolution of all internal crises within the LP.

“We are committed to laying a robust foundation to conduct elections seamlessly, starting from the grassroots, through local governments, states, and up to the national convention levels,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

“This preparatory work is geared towards the forthcoming off-cycle elections and the 2027 general elections. Building a party with transparent and accountable leadership is crucial for election readiness, especially when facing an incumbent government; it’s no easy task,” he emphasized.

Umar expressed optimism that once Nigerians witness the Labour Party’s renewed trajectory, they will throw their support behind it. He affirmed the party’s aspiration to secure electoral victories across Nigeria, positioning itself as a major opposition force.

To achieve this goal, the committee plans to conduct congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels, culminating in a national convention to elect new leadership.

“We are closely monitoring the situation to ensure a peaceful transition of leadership. The crisis within the Labour Party, exacerbated by Julius Abure’s disputed chairmanship, will be resolved through legal channels,” Umar assured LP members.

In March, Julius Abure was elected as LP’s National Chairman during the party’s national convention in Nnewi, Anambra. However, the NLC rejected the convention’s outcome, leading to the formation of the transition committee under Umar’s leadership.

The committee, including co-chairmen Sam Amadi and Abiodun Olamosu, alongside secretary Nnawuihe Nwauwa, has been tasked with rejuvenating the party within a 90-day timeframe, ultimately leading to a national convention.
