Organised Labour has rejected the Federal Government’s new minimum wage proposal of ₦60,000, citing a disconnect with the country’s economic realities. This was disclosed by the President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday…………CONTINUE READING
Osifo criticized the federal government’s indifferent approach to the minimum wage discussions, warning that organised labour is prepared to go on strike if the issue is not resolved promptly.
With Nigeria’s inflation rate at 33.69% as of April 2024, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Osifo stated that labour had to “completely reject” the Federal Government’s offer of ₦60,000.
“The government must be very serious in addressing the issue of a new minimum wage,” Osifo said. “We completely reject it. We want the government to be serious. Let them provide a breakdown of how a family is supposed to survive on a minimum wage of ₦60,000. Remember, our ultimatum issued on May 1st still stands, and today is May 28th. This means we have three days left to resolve this matter.”
Commenting on the reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu, Osifo accused the government of inconsistent policies and a lack of thorough planning, rating their performance 2.5 out of 10, or 25%.
For months, labour unions and the Federal Government have been in negotiations over a new minimum wage, with the unions setting a deadline of May 31st. Initially, labour demanded a ₦615,000 minimum wage but has since reduced its demand to ₦494,000. The government and the organised private sector initially proposed ₦48,000 and ₦54,000, respectively, which were also rejected by labour.
During the latest meeting of the minimum wage committee on Tuesday, labour once again rejected the Federal Government’s new proposal
