According to a statement by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity at the EFCC, the arrests were made following credible intelligence and surveillance efforts on Friday, May 24, 2024, in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The suspects involved in illegal mining are identified as Waliyu Abidoye, Abubakar Auwal, Abdulrauf Hakim, Sabiu Usman, Salihu Godwin, Dauda Mohammed, and Olalekan Aremu. At the time of arrest, five truckloads of assorted minerals suspected to include lepidolite, lithium, and precious stones were seized from them.

Investigations revealed that the suspects were operating without proper licenses or authorization to purchase and possess minerals. They were also found to be evading royalty payments to the federal and state governments as required by law.

Additionally, Waheed and Olalekan were apprehended for allegedly attempting to bribe EFCC operatives to secure the release of a seized truck. The officers, however, feigned cooperation and arrested the suspects at the point of delivering the bribe.

Waheed, claiming to be a filling station manager in Ogbomoso, was found with N995,500, while Olalekan, who claimed to be a scavenger, had N201,000 in his possession.

The EFCC stated that the suspects would face prosecution once ongoing investigations are concluded
