40 Hostages Freed: Bandits In Niger State Release Captives After Payment Of N2m Ransom
Bandits in Kuchi community, Munya Local Government Area of Niger State, have released 40 out of the 150 residents they abducted three weeks ago. Among the victims were women and children. The community secured their freedom on June 11, 2024, after paying a ransom of N2 million to the bandits. Additionally, the community contributed funds to purchase 12 Honda motorcycles, valued at N1.2 million each, which were handed over to the bandits. However, 110 villagers are still held captive, with ongoing ransom negotiations. The bandits have proposed releasing another 40 hostages in exchange for an additional N2 million and six motorcycles. Initially demanding N150 million ransom, the bandits rejected the community’s offer of N100,000 per abducted individual. Negotiations led to the agreement of N2 million and six motorcycles for each group of 40 captives. Despite the ordeal, no government officials or security agents have visited the community to assess the situation. As a result, the community remains vulnerable and deserted.
