A mob in Pakistan broke into a police station to seize a tourist, Mohammad Ismail, who they subsequently beat to death and set on fire over accusations of desecrating the Quran.
Ismail, who was staying at a hotel in Madyan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, was accused of blasphemy by local residents. In response, a large crowd stormed the police station where he was being held for protection, overpowered the officers, and took him.
The mob also set fire to the police station and several police vehicles. Police have filed a case against hundreds of individuals and are working to identify those responsible for the attack and the killing.
Rahim Ullah, a police official, confirmed the incident and stated that additional forces had been deployed to restore order. Ismail, a tourist from Sialkot, Punjab, was identified as the victim.
Rights groups highlight that blasphemy accusations in Pakistan are frequently misused to target religious minorities and settle personal disputes.
