Reports have revealed that Patience Jonathan has kept 15 of her domestic staff locked up at the Okaka Correctional Centre in Bayelsa State since 2019, allegedly over an unfounded robbery accusation. The workers have reportedly been languishing behind bars without a court conviction, as their trial has been repeatedly delayed, reportedly due to Patience Jonathan’s influence.

In an interview with SaharaReporters, one of the detained workers shared that several prominent individuals from Bayelsa State had approached the former president to plead for their release. However, they claim Goodluck Jonathan dismissed their pleas upon learning that none of the individuals involved were from his home state.

The source also accused Jonathan’s former Chief Security Officer, Collins Otutu, of being responsible for overseeing the workers’ torture during their detention.

The source stated, “Several years ago, before the case became protracted, some well-meaning people from Bayelsa tried to intervene and ask Patience Jonathan for peace, but she refused. These same individuals also approached Goodluck Jonathan, but he asked if any of us were from Bayelsa. When they said no, he remained silent on the matter. Initially, we thought he wasn’t aware that his wife had locked us up.”

The worker also expressed disillusionment, pointing out that Collins Otutu, who was an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) at the time, took part in their torture. They added, “It felt especially painful because Jonathan, a man who has been traveling as a peace ambassador to advocate for peace and freedom, was silent while his security chief was tormenting us.”
