Labour Party chieftain, Pat Utomi, has strongly criticized the Senate’s decision to suspend Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Natasha had earlier accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, but the Senate handed her a six-month suspension, citing gross misconduct and violation of Senate rules.

Reacting to the suspension, Utomi, in a series of tweets on his handle, argued that Natasha was denied a fair hearing.

“What is even more concerning is that, at a time of global uncertainty and national economic hardship—when leaders should be focused on development—the Senate is indulging in acts of impunity and frivolity,” he stated.

He further criticized Akpabio and Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, noting that Akpabio himself had behaved worse under former Senate President Bukola Saraki, while Bamidele had once fought expulsion from UNIBEN in a legal battle led by Femi Falana SAN.

As President of the Centre for Values in Leadership, Utomi also expressed concern that Natasha’s suspension could discourage women’s participation in politics.

“On International Women’s Day, we often highlight the better representation of women in legislatures like Rwanda’s compared to Nigeria. Yet, at such a time, the Akpabio-led Senate has chosen to expel one of the only four female senators over frivolous allegations, denying the people of Kogi the representation they elected,” he lamented.
