Abia Women Protest Against Alleged Murder, Seek Accountability At Govt House

Around 300 women from the Ozu Abam community in the Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State have organized a peaceful demonstration at both the Abia State Government House and the State House of Assembly in Umuahia. Their protest is directed against alleged attacks by their neighbors, Ndi Okorie Abam.

The women claim that these attacks have resulted in the tragic death of one Chinedu, their son, who was reportedly killed by assailants from Ndi Okorie Abam while harvesting fruits on his farm. Additionally, the attacks have allegedly led to the destruction of farms belonging to the people of Ozu Abam.

According to the protesters, some Ozu Abam indigenes were kidnapped, and those who managed to escape sustained injuries, with some currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia.

Mrs. Uche Egbuta, leading the protest and dressed in black attire, asserted that their community is consistently under attack by their neighbors from Ndi Okorie Abam, who allegedly ambushed and assaulted them with dangerous weapons. She urged the Abia State government to intervene immediately, emphasizing their desire to avoid retaliatory actions, hence their peaceful protest.

Mrs. Egbuta highlighted the historical context of the land dispute, noting that it has claimed numerous lives of Ozu Abam indigenes in the past.

In response, the Abia State government, represented by the Secretary to the State government (SSG) Professor Kenneth Kalu, assured the public that every necessary measure would be taken to bring an end to the ongoing land dispute.

Furthermore, Uchenna Okoro, the member representing Arochukwu constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, disclosed his multiple efforts to bring lasting peace to the region and appealed for calm in the affected areas.
