During his visit to the Abuja Metro Station in Idu and the Airport Station, which took place less than 48 hours after the swearing-in of the new ministers, Wike made it abundantly clear that he expected the rail rehabilitation to be completed within an eight-month timeframe. He has subsequently directed the permanent secretary to finalize payments to the Chinese concession company to ensure this timeline is met.

Highlighting the importance of this project, Wike reminded all present that restoring the Abuja metro is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ameliorating the challenges faced by Nigerians promptly.

The minister, along with Mairiga Mahmud, the Minister of State for FCT, and several other officials, didn’t hold back in questioning the contractors about the quality of their work when they visited the main terminal of the metro station. CONTINUE READING

For better understanding, Wike, along with his entourage, took a train ride covering the metro station, Idu Station, and finally the Airport Station. The rail system, initially divided into six phases, was supported financially with loans obtained from the China EXIM Bank. Unfortunately, after the rails faced significant vandalism, the FCT Administration found itself sanctioning a new contract worth N5 billion in August 2023, setting a goal of 12 months for its rehabilitation.

Launched in 2018, the Abuja light rail operated for a short span of two years. It had to halt operations primarily because of rampant vandalism issues.

Nyesom Wike, proudly the first southerner to hold the title of FCT Minister, is determined to deliver a fully rehabilitated rail system to the President by April 2024. The nation waits in anticipation to see this promise fulfilled.
