Abuja’s Chinese Retail Outlet Clears Air On Allegations Of Discrimination Towards Nigerians

The proprietor of a Chinese retail establishment in Abuja, which has been under scrutiny for its alleged discriminatory entry policy, refutes claims that her business is exclusively for a particular demographic.

Earlier reports from Naija News highlighted a raid conducted by officials from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) on a Chinese retail store in Abuja, amidst allegations that it barred Nigerians from patronizing it.

The raid ensued following public outcry on social media from Nigerians condemning the management of the Abuja-based Chinese retail store for allegedly denying entry to Nigerians.

Situated at the China General Chamber of Commerce along Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Road in the Federal Capital Territory, the store is known for its offering of Chinese cuisine and beverages. However, it has been purported that entry is restricted solely to individuals of Chinese descent.

In response, the owner of the establishment, Liu Bei, issued a statement in both Chinese and English languages, clarifying that her business in Nigeria’s capital is not a supermarket but rather a retail shop aimed at meeting the essential needs of the local community.

Expressing apprehension about unfamiliar individuals gathering outside her store, Liu Bei emphasized that the establishment serves residents, employees, and visitors alike, irrespective of nationality. She stressed that the small retail shop is distinct from supermarkets and disclosed plans to scale down operations and eventually close by December 2023.

Liu Bei’s statement addressed reports by PUNCH, asserting her non-discriminatory stance towards Nigerians and highlighting the presence of local employees in her store. She explained that while her shop enforces community requirements for visitors due to safety concerns, she regrets any confrontation between security personnel and visitors, noting instances where Nigerians were served in her establishment.
