Academic Scandal? US-Based Professor Accuses FUD Of Lowering Standards To Push Graduates Out

The academic, Moses Ochonu, raised the alarm on X, describing the move as deeply troubling and a negative signal for the future of tertiary education in Nigeria. Reacting to the document, he wrote, “It is finished. Has it really come to this? The future looks bleak.”
The circular, dated December 23, 2025, was issued by the university’s Directorate of Academic Affairs and informed staff and students that the Senate, at its 73rd extraordinary meeting, had approved 25 marks as the minimum obtainable score for the award of a concessional pass across all faculties and departments.
It stated that the policy would take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session.
According to the notice, the decision followed concerns that some students were deliberately skipping lectures, refusing to take continuous assessment tests, or failing to sit for examinations, believing they would automatically qualify for a concessional pass. The university noted that such practices undermined academic standards and violated Senate regulations.
The circular, signed on behalf of the registrar, further clarified that only students who scored 25 marks and above would henceforth be eligible for consideration for a concessional pass.
