Adekunle Gold Shares How Sickle Cell Anaemia Drove His Latest Mission

In the latest installment of African Voices Changemakers, CNN’s Larry Madowo engaged in an insightful conversation with Nigerian Afropop artist Adekunle Gold, marking his first detailed interview about his journey with sickle cell anemia and its profound influence on his new mission. The acclaimed singer gained global attention with his debut album ‘Gold’, which surged to number seven on the Billboard World Charts. In a surprising revelation through his song ‘Five Star’ in 2022, fans discovered his private battle with sickle cell anemia. Speaking to Madowo, Gold shared, “I finally found the courage to openly discuss it. Many people can’t share their story like I can. When I wrote ‘Five Star’, I reflected on my life’s journey and realized I am a miracle.”

Sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder causing irregularly shaped red blood cells, affects more than 66% of those impacted globally, particularly in Africa, according to the World Health Organization. The condition can lead to severe pain, anemia, and potentially fatal complications. Gold candidly addressed the challenges he faced due to the illness, emphasizing the adjustments he made to maintain his health. “Throughout my life, I knew there were limitations from childhood. I experienced joint pains, worsened by activities like playing in the rain, which I shouldn’t have done.” He added, “I never wanted this to define me. I committed to exercising more, adhering to medication, improving my diet, prioritizing rest, and staying hydrated.”

Gold also highlighted the importance of raising awareness about sickle cell anemia. “By sharing my story on social media, I realized many people lack understanding,” he said. In a proactive effort to support others affected by the disease, he partnered with the Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative to organize a medical outreach at Akerele Primary Healthcare Centre in Surulere, Lagos State.
