Afe Babalola Warns Nigerians About Police Acting Like Military ForcesLegal icon Aare Afe Babalola has called on Nigerians to show the police the same level of respect as they do military personnel in order to ensure order and security in the country. He made this statement on Wednesday during the 4th edition of the Aare Afe Babalola Distinguished Personality Lecture Series at Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD). Babalola suggested that Nigeria’s laws should be amended so that the military would take on a more significant role in enforcing law and order. He emphasized that orderliness and discipline in society are the most effective solutions to the country’s challenges.
He said, “For me, the military today is the most disciplined institution in this country. The problem we face in Nigeria is essentially a lack of discipline, from leadership down to the general public.” He questioned how security, leadership, and peace could be achieved without order, referencing a Biblical principle that “order is the first law in heaven.”
Babalola also pointed out the disparity in how Nigerians treat police officers and soldiers, noting that many people show little respect for police officers, especially when they are seen on motorcycles. In contrast, he said, “When a person sees a soldier, they immediately show respect and composure.” He called for a national effort to foster unity, emphasizing that maintaining order and discipline is crucial for the country’s progress.
Reflecting on the military’s discipline, Babalola shared an experience from 2016 when he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Lit) by the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). He recalled that during the ceremony, the hall was so quiet and orderly that no one left their seat throughout the event. He remarked, “That was the peak of orderliness and discipline. Before that, I thought my university was the epitome of order and discipline. But after seeing what I witnessed at NDA, I truly commend the military for its exceptional discipline.
