Dated June 12, 2024, and obtained by The PUNCH, the letter outlines the critical need for both political and economic restructuring to tackle pressing governance challenges threatening the nation’s stability. Titled “Proposal of Ideas for the Structural Transformation of the Nigerian Polity,” it emphasizes the urgency of transformative action.

Fapohunda stated, “This communication serves as a gentle reminder of the urgent need to transform the Nigerian polity. While change can be difficult, a fundamental reworking of our system is essential.”

He acknowledged the significant challenge in initiating comprehensive change, particularly with seven years remaining in Tinubu’s administration. His proposal includes a draft for an executive bill to be presented to the National Assembly, aiming to decentralize the country into modules that can compete and collaborate in developmental efforts for the benefit of citizens.

Additionally, Fapohunda suggested establishing a technical panel of nine members to facilitate governance reforms. He criticized the current system, advocating for a transition from being financial appendages of “Abuja” to creating economically viable regional territories, supported by a map from the Coalition of Indigenous Ethnic Nationalities.

He called on the President to invoke a doctrine of necessity to review the socio-political landscape without further delay, stressing the need for prompt action to address the existing challenges.
