A’Ibom Lawmaker Requests Sufficient Funding For Maintenance Of Calabar Federal HighwayMoses Essien, a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly representing the Ibiono Ibom constituency, has called on the federal government to increase funding for the Calabar-Itu road project and ensure its timely completion to alleviate the difficulties faced by motorists.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The construction and dualization of the project, undertaken by three construction firms, have been ongoing for over five years without significant progress, primarily due to insufficient funding. Parts of the road have deteriorated to the point where journeys that should take less than two hours now extend into days.

During a visit to a damaged section of the road at Ikot Ebom in Ibiono Ibom LGA, where motorists and commuters have been stranded for extended periods, Essien urged the federal government to expedite the construction of the long-neglected federal highway.

As the House Committee chairman on health, Essien stressed the urgent need for federal support, highlighting the road’s critical role in boosting economic growth, fostering unity, and ensuring the safety of travelers between the South-South and South-East regions and beyond.

“As the representative of the people of Ibiono Ibom and a regular user of this road, I felt it was essential to witness the situation firsthand,” Essien stated. “What I have seen is alarming—the road has become nearly impassable, causing immense suffering for my constituents and other users.”

He appealed directly to President Bola Tinubu, urging immediate action to secure proper funding for this vital road, which serves as a key link in the region. Essien expressed concern over the hardships endured by travelers: “Just imagine the plight of those stranded for days without reaching their destinations. This road is crucial for accessing both Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, and its condition severely impacts our region and the nation as a whole.
