Aiyedatiwa Breaks Silence: LG Autonomy Can’t Be A Lawless Free-For-All

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has emphasized that the implementation of Local Government (LG) autonomy must be conducted within the boundaries of the constitution and relevant laws to be effective and sustainable.

Speaking in Akure at the opening of a four-day sensitization workshop for political appointees and senior management staff of local councils, the governor highlighted the importance of responsible governance at the grassroots.

The workshop, themed “Economic and Financial Administration of Local Councils in Nigeria,” was organized by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Also in collaboration were the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Ondo State Public Complaints, Financial Crimes and Anti-Corruption Commission (SPFACC).

Governor Aiyedatiwa noted that while local government autonomy is essential, it comes with significant responsibilities. He said the training was a timely response to the erosion of public trust and aimed at correcting factors that have stalled development at the grassroots.

According to him, the workshop will equip participants with better governance knowledge, enhance leadership and management skills, and foster stronger cooperation between elected officials and career civil servants at the local level.

He further emphasized that political offices are not meant for self-enrichment or settling political scores, but should be seen as a platform to improve citizens’ welfare.

Reiterating his administration’s resolve to instill accountability, efficiency, and results-driven leadership at all levels of government, the governor pledged continued support for efforts that promote transparency, prudent financial management, and robust monitoring at the local government level.

Also speaking at the event, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, said the workshop was backed by the governor to tackle critical issues in local governance. He underscored the importance of local councils as the closest tier of government to the people, primarily responsible for service delivery and development.

Takuro added that the training would provide contemporary tools and skills needed for efficient administration, while reinforcing transparency and accountability.

EFCC Benin Zonal Director, Mr. Effa Okim, praised the Ondo government for partnering with the commission in its anti-corruption drive. He stressed the need to maintain the collaboration to ensure wealth is equitably distributed and services effectively delivered.

Okim expressed concern over individuals with questionable wealth surpassing societal standards and called for greater responsibility and accountability from all levels of government.

In a similar vein, ICPC Resident Commissioner for Ondo and Ekiti, Mr. Tiku Menge-Andrew, commended the state for taking proactive steps in combating corruption and fostering good governance.

SPFACC Secretary, Prof. Adewole Adeyeye, applauded Governor Aiyedatiwa for creating synergy among anti-graft agencies and pledged that his commission would continue contributing to capacity-building efforts for local government officials.
