Addressing accusations from the presidency that the protests are politically motivated, Ajaero stated that dismissing these concerns would undermine the fundamental right of Nigerians to peaceful dissent. He asserted in a statement on Monday that while the NLC aims to avoid exacerbating the country’s situation through protests, they cannot stand idly by while Nigerians’ rights are disregarded.

Ajaero criticized the notion that the hardships Nigerians endure daily are merely political dissent, labeling it as condescending. He emphasized that regardless of any political undertones, citizens have the right to voice their grievances through protests, as the current unrest is driven by genuine societal concerns rather than political manipulation.

He called upon President Tinubu to engage directly with Nigerians, rejecting any suggestion that citizens should refrain from protesting amid severe economic challenges. Ajaero highlighted the immense difficulties faced by unemployed individuals, nursing mothers, and youths struggling with prolonged joblessness and responsibilities.

“In these challenging times, Nigerians’ right to voice their complaints must be fully respected,” Ajaero stressed, urging for dialogue rather than confrontation. He emphasized the paradox of expecting calm from those suffering under the weight of economic adversity, likening it to expecting a child not to cry after being punished.

The NLC president concluded by emphasizing the necessity for empathy and understanding from the government towards the plight of its citizens during these trying times.
