This oath-taking ceremony followed the Appeal Court’s declaration of Akobundu as the winner of the Abia-Central senatorial election.

The Clerk of the Senate, Mr. Chinedu Akubueze, administered the oath and allegiance to Senator Akobundu.

The Appeal Court had overturned the previous ruling of the Election Petitions Tribunal in Umuahia, which had dismissed Akobundu’s petition against the declaration of Sen.

Darlington Nwokocha of the Labour Party (LP) as the winner of the Abia-Central Senatorial poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

While the Election Petitions Tribunal had dismissed Akobundu’s petition on September 11 for lack of merit, the Court of Appeal, on November 4, reversed this decision.

The three-member court upheld the merit of Akobundu’s petition, declaring him the rightful winner of the election and instructing INEC to promptly issue him a Certificate of Return.
