Speaking on the visit, Atiku explained that the delegation, which included friends and political associates, came to celebrate the monarch’s ascension. He expressed regret at not being able to attend the coronation ceremony but was delighted that the Olubadan personally greeted each member of the group by name, recalling their shared years in public service.
The delegation featured notable figures such as former PDP National Chairman Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, ex-Cross River Governor Lyel Imoke, former Kaduna Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, ex-Minister of Police Affairs Mallam Adamu Maina Waziri, and Mallam Kashim Imam.
On his account, Atiku wrote:
“Earlier today, I led a delegation of friends and political associates to the ancient city of Ibadan on a congratulatory visit to HRH Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja Arusa I, the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. My delegation included Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, Mr Lyel Imoke, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Mallam Adamu Maina Waziri, and Mallam Kashim Imam.
“I was thrilled that the Olubadan called every member of the delegation by their names, remembering our decades of shared service to the nation. I am proud that Kabiyesi, a longtime associate, has ascended the throne of his forebears.
“Although I could not attend the historic coronation due to protocol logistics, I pray that Oba Ladoja enjoys a long reign marked by good health, vitality, growth, prosperity, and peace in Ibadanland. I trust his commitment to serve justice to all, irrespective of religious or political divides.
“I sincerely thank the people of Ibadan for turning out in large numbers to receive me and my delegation at the city gate.”
