Akpabio Issues Warning To Senate Committee Chairmen Over Underperformance
Akpabio Issues Warning To Senate Committee Chairmen Over UnderperformanceSenate President, Godswill Akpabio, has issued a stern warning to underperforming committee chairmen, threatening to replace them if they fail to meet expectations. The warning came during Tuesday’s plenary session in response to concerns raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central), who criticized the Senate Committee on Finance for failing to conduct oversight on 92 revenue-generating agencies.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Akpabio expressed frustration over the consistent disregard by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for National Assembly invitations, highlighting the importance of effective oversight for good governance. He emphasized that the Senate would not hesitate to reshuffle committee leadership if committees fail to fulfill their responsibilities.
He stated, “If, for any reason, some committees find it difficult to conduct oversight on their agencies, we will make changes so that those with the capacity and capability can step in and perform their duties for the benefit of democracy.”
To ensure progress, Akpabio directed all standing committee chairmen to submit reports on their oversight activities by January 31, 2025. This will help assess their performance and address any challenges they may be facing.
The Senate President also reminded MDAs of the constitutional power of the National Assembly to issue arrest warrants in cases of non-compliance with invitations. “The Constitution backs us. I do not see why any MDA or agency would refuse to comply with a Senate or National Assembly committee’s request,” he warned, adding that any failure to act on such defiance would set a dangerous precedent.
With over 70 standing committees in the Senate, each plays a critical role in ensuring accountability and transparency in government.
