In a statement issued on Monday, Kingsley Chinda, the caucus leader, condemned the frequent abductions of travelers on highways, including the recent kidnapping of 29 medical students in Benue State who were en route to a conference. The lawmakers warned that such incidents jeopardize the future of education and healthcare in the country.
The caucus also criticized the abduction of traditional leaders, such as the Sarkin Gobir of Gatawa district in Sokoto and his son, as well as the killing of the Gara of Chanchanji and his son in Taraba State. They labeled these incidents as indicative of a complete breakdown in national security.
The lawmakers called on security agencies to adopt new strategies and act swiftly to rescue kidnapped individuals and hold the perpetrators accountable. They urged the government to prioritize the safety of Nigerians by enhancing intelligence gathering, improving coordination among security agencies, and implementing community-based security measures.
Additionally, the caucus appealed to President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to address the security crisis by declaring a state of emergency in the security sector. They emphasized that the recent kidnappings, including the abduction of Anambra State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Patrick Mba, underscore the severe threat to public safety.
The Minority Caucus criticized the current security situation, describing it as a troubling trend of increasing lawlessness and insecurity. They stressed that the government must move beyond rhetoric and take concrete actions to restore peace and security throughout Nigeria.
