All Eyes On Supreme Court As Ruling Day Arrives For 9 Governors Involved In 2023 Polls

An unnamed top official at the Supreme Court informed Vanguard that the judgments in some of these cases have been expedited, with decisions expected to be delivered today. The court has cleared its schedule for the entire next week to allow its justices, who are reportedly overworked, to rest.

Justice Inyang Okoro will lead the panel overseeing some of the appeals, while another panel will be headed by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun. Although all cases were heard by a five-member panel, during the last Friday session where marathon judgments were delivered on governorship election appeals from eight states, eight Justices presided over the proceedings.

A panel led by Justice Kekere-Ekun had previously announced that it would deliver judgment on an appeal seeking to nullify the election of Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Mohammed Barde, are challenging the concurrent verdict of the Court of Appeal and the Gombe State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, both of which dismissed their case against Governor Yahaya of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The court dismissed another appeal against Governor Yahaya’s election, filed by the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nafiu Bala, who withdrew the case after the apex court panel pointed out that it was based on pre-election issues.

Similarly, the Supreme Court has reserved judgment on the Kaduna State governorship election dispute. The PDP and its candidate, Mohammed Ashiru, are urging the court to invalidate the election of Governor Uba Sani of the APC. The PDP contends that Governor Sani was not duly elected by the majority of valid votes cast, alleging irregularities and non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.
