Alleged Coup Plot: Ma’aji Wanted To Lead Government, Install Bappah As EFCC Boss – Report

Fresh details have emerged regarding the alleged post-coup transition plans reportedly drawn up by military officers accused of plotting to overthrow the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

According to investigative statements obtained by Premium Times, Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji allegedly intended to assume the position of Head of Government if the planned takeover had succeeded.

Major Abdulkarim Ibrahim reportedly told investigators that Ma’aji planned to move into the Presidential Villa after another alleged member of the group, identified as Mr. Usman, secured access to the seat of government.

Ibrahim also claimed that Ma’aji intended to announce a new set of service chiefs during his first national address following the proposed takeover.

However, he said members of the alleged group were not informed of the identities of those expected to fill the positions.

The investigative documents further revealed that some of the suspects allegedly discussed the roles they hoped to occupy in the proposed administration.

According to Ibrahim’s statement, members of the group were asked to indicate the positions they would prefer if the operation succeeded.

He alleged that Major Ilyasu Jamilu expressed interest in serving as an aide-de-camp, while Lieutenant Sunday Felix reportedly claimed he had been promised a ministerial appointment.

Lieutenant-Colonel Shamsuddeen Bappah was also said to have requested to be appointed Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Defendants Face Treason, Terrorism Charges

The alleged coup plot is currently the subject of criminal proceedings before both military and civilian courts.

Serving military officers implicated in the case are standing trial before a General Court Martial convened by the military authorities, while retired officers and civilian suspects linked to the alleged plot are being prosecuted before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The defendants before the Federal High Court are facing a 13-count charge bordering on treason, terrorism, failure to disclose information and money laundering in connection with the alleged failed coup attempt.
