The American International School of Abuja has reimbursed $760,910.84 to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) amid an ongoing probe involving former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello. This refund is part of a larger sum of $845,852 allegedly paid by Bello in 2021 to cover extensive school fees for his children.
The refunded amount pertains to tuition fees for five children of the ex-governor, originally intended to secure their education from 2021 to 2035.
These actions come amidst accusations against Bello of misappropriating N80.2 billion from state funds, which he vehemently denies, asserting resistance against what he deems coercive efforts to admit guilt.
The EFCC, actively pursuing the case, presented court documents indicating Bello’s substantial payment, covering not only immediate educational needs but also provisions for a prospective fifth child, contingent on admission and space availability in the school by August 2022.
A high-ranking source within the EFCC revealed, “The American school refunded the school fees in two tranches. Initially, it returned $720,000 to the EFCC and later $40,910,” indicating a mutual agreement between the school and the commission, allowing the school to retain a portion of the fees, approximately $84,942, for its services.
Mr. Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity at EFCC, confirmed the refund, stating, “The school has refunded $760,910 to this commission.”
In response to the EFCC’s allegations, Bello, through his spokesperson Ohiare Michael, criticized the commission’s claims as false and misleading. Bello asserted that the fees for his children were not paid from Kogi state government funds, refuting the amounts stated by the EFCC and clarifying that the payments commenced in 2021, not coinciding with his tenure’s end as alleged.
The ongoing investigation underscores the complexity and scrutiny surrounding financial transactions involving public figures, particularly amid claims of misappropriation and corruption.
