Amidst ongoing economic challenges, MultiChoice Nigeria, the company behind popular cable TV platforms DStv and GOtv, has announced a fresh round of price increases for its monthly subscription packages.
According to the latest price list obtained by Naija News on Wednesday, the monthly subscription fee for Compact Plus, the top-tier bouquet on DStv, has been raised from ₦29,500 to ₦37,000. Similarly, the highest package on GOtv, Supa Plus, will now cost ₦15,700, up from ₦12,500.
Sources within MultiChoice, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the impending price hike to Naija News, stating that it will come into effect on May 1, 2024.
This announcement follows a series of previous price adjustments by MultiChoice Nigeria, including one in November 2023.
The decision to increase subscription fees comes amidst a challenging economic climate, exacerbated by policy changes such as the removal of fuel subsidies upon President Bola Tinubu’s assumption of office. This move led to a significant surge in fuel prices, from around ₦189 per liter to over ₦600, placing additional financial strain on households across the country.
Furthermore, the government’s decision to float the national currency further weakened its value in the foreign exchange market, contributing to the overall increase in commodity prices.
In this environment of economic uncertainty, consumers are grappling with rising living costs, making the prospect of higher subscription fees for entertainment services like DStv and GOtv an additional burden on household budgets.
