The accusations further included charges of fraudulently enticing and harboring a seven-year-old boy, forcibly detaining the child against the rightful possession of the parents. These charges were in violation of the Criminal Code, Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria, 1991, and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition and Protection) Laws of Anambra State, 2017.

The events leading to the charges unfolded in 2023. During the trial, the court granted a two-week grace period for the defendants to produce the abducted child, a demand they failed to meet.

Chief Magistrate Genevieve Osakwe, presiding over the case, declared the defendants guilty on all five charges. She emphasized the overwhelming evidence presented by the oral testimonies of the defendants, submissions from plaintiff witnesses, and other materials before the court. The sentences handed down were four years for count one, five years each for counts two, three, and four, and six months for count five. Importantly, the magistrate clarified that all sentences would run concurrently, with no option of a fine.

Both convicts, Faith Obi from Akpakumeze in Odi, Enugu State, and Chinenye Obete from Ezamgbo in Ebonyi State, were brought before the court in 2023 and sentenced this year for their involvement in child abduction, illegal trafficking of children, and child stealing.

In response to the verdict, Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, expressed satisfaction and cautioned potential offenders to stay away from the state, as the current administration is committed to taking decisive action against them. She commended the court’s efforts in safeguarding children and pledged to use all available resources to apprehend the second suspect, who is currently at large.
