On Sunday, August 25, the Anambra State Government responded to reports of a violent altercation between Mrs. Chinwe Achugbu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, and Mrs. Nkem, a Head of Department. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, August 15, reportedly involved a serious argument that led to Achugbu allegedly strangling Nkem, resulting in the latter being placed in a coma.
Achugbu, who was appointed as one of the new permanent secretaries in March 2024 by Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and Nkem were involved in the altercation at the Dora Akunyili Development Centre. The situation required intervention from Mrs. Ify Obinabo, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, to restore temporary peace between the two.
Due to the severity of her injuries, Mrs. Nkem was rushed to Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (Amaku General Hospital) for emergency treatment.
Reports suggest that physical altercations among ministry staff have occurred before. The Head of Service, Theodora Igwegbe, acknowledged seeing the incident on social media but has not yet received a formal report. She assured that an investigation would follow to determine the facts and decide on appropriate actions.
