Anambra’s Minimum Wage Status Sparks Discord Among Labour Groups....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its Anambra State branch are at odds over the state’s implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage. During an appearance on Arise News Channel, NLC Head of Information, Comrade Benson Upah, criticized Anambra for being the worst state in minimum wage payments………..CONTINUE READING

“It’s the state that pays the least minimum wage. The national minimum wage is not synonymous with the pay structure of the state. It’s absurd that a Level 14 officer in Benue State earns more than a Level 16 officer in Anambra State. Anambra does not value its workers or the dignity of labour. It is one of the states observing the minimum wage law in breach, and that is why we have asked the state’s workers to mobilize for action,” Upah stated.

However, former NLC chairman in Anambra, Comrade Godwin Osisioma, responded on behalf of the state government, acknowledging that while Anambra’s minimum wage may be lower than some states, the overall pay package is competitive.

“Yes, Anambra’s take-home package is lower than a few states, but every state is complying with the law. An agreement was reached during the last regime to implement the minimum wage structure, and it was promptly executed. When Governor Soludo took office, he continued with this implementation. Anambra is not owing any workers, and Soludo even increased their pay,” Osisioma explained.

He added that while not defending the state government, Soludo is ready to address all issues raised by the state NLC leadership. Regarding the controversy over Ndiolu Microfinance Bank, Osisioma mentioned that the governor has set up a committee to investigate.

Osisioma clarified that the N24,000 mentioned by the NLC spokesman is only the basic salary, excluding allowances. He also noted that Anambra is up to date with pension payments.

“When Soludo took office, he inherited pension arrears but ensured no new arrears accrued. He pays pensions before salaries, and salaries are disbursed before the end of each month,” Osisioma said
