In a recent development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of 115 suspected currency racketeers in Enugu State. The operation, conducted by operatives of the Enugu Zonal Command in collaboration with a Joint Task Force comprising teams from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Customs Service, yielded significant results. According to a press release issued by the EFCC on Thursday evening, the arrests were made following credible intelligence about illegal foreign exchange activities involving bureau de change operators, currency speculators, and street hawkers in the Owerri Road area of Ogui, Enugu State.
The statement detailed that the suspects, comprising 113 males and two females, were apprehended in a sting operation. Among the items recovered from them were N110,700,000.00 in Nigerian currency, $8,368.00 in US dollars, £145.00 in pounds, €2,725 in euros, as well as currencies from South Africa, CFA, Turkiya, and Bank Mozambique. Additionally, a safe abandoned by one of the street hawkers was seized.
Preliminary investigations revealed that some of the suspects are foreigners from Niger Republic. The EFCC stated that legal actions would be taken against them in due course.
The operation comes amidst heightened efforts by security agencies to curb illegal currency trading activities in Nigeria. Just recently, security operatives raided several Bureau De Change outlets in Abuja, resulting in the arrest of over 100 operators as the country’s currency faced further challenges. Additionally, popular cryptocurrency trading platform, Binance, acknowledged restricted access to its official website for Nigerian users but assured the safety of their funds.
