The All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Group has alleged that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, are behind the impeachment threats against Governor Siminalayi Fubara over his refusal to approve what it described as fictitious projects in the state’s 2026 budget.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The group made the allegation on Friday in Port Harcourt while reacting to claims by the lawmakers that Governor Fubara had violated the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu to resolve the prolonged political crisis in the state.

Addressing journalists, the coordinator of the APC South-South Group, Freedom Amadi, said the impeachment drive had nothing to do with any breach of the peace accord, but was instead a calculated response to the governor’s resistance to pressure to pad the budget with questionable expenditure items.

The group dismissed allegations that Fubara acted in bad faith or undermined the Tinubu-mediated agreement, describing such claims as a challenge to presidential authority and a threat to democratic stability.

According to the APC South-South Group, the peace deal was meant to restore calm and enable effective governance, not to subject the governor to political coercion under the guise of legislative oversight.

Amadi stated, “What is happening in Rivers State is not a constitutional disagreement but a deliberate attempt to punish a sitting governor for refusing to compromise public funds for private political interests. Governor Siminalayi Fubara did not breach the President’s peace agreement; rather, his refusal to insert fictitious projects into the budget is now being used as grounds for impeachment.

“When lawmakers suggest that not even the President can restrain them, they are not asserting independence but displaying institutional insubordination. President Tinubu intervened as the elected leader of the country, not as a partisan figure, and his peace initiative cannot be treated as optional.”

He added that the agreement was intended to restore stability and respect constitutional boundaries, not to empower political intimidation or legislative excess.

The group further alleged that the impeachment move was being driven by lawmakers acting in concert with Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers State.

It expressed concern over Wike’s silence on the issue despite serving in an APC-led federal government, describing it as troubling in light of President Tinubu’s role in brokering peace.

The APC South-South warned that using impeachment as a tool for political revenge would undermine public trust in democratic institutions and weaken the credibility of the legislature.

Amadi said, “It is difficult to separate the current impeachment threats from the political influence of Minister Nyesom Wike. The lawmakers spearheading this move are his loyalists, and their actions suggest a coordinated effort to maintain political control through legislative pressure.

“President Tinubu demonstrated political goodwill by appointing a member of the opposition into his cabinet for national unity. That trust is compromised if a serving minister allows his supporters to undermine a presidential peace initiative.”

He stressed that impeachment should remain a serious constitutional mechanism, not a political weapon.

“What we are witnessing is not accountability but retaliation; not oversight but vendetta against a governor who chose fiscal responsibility over political submission,” Amadi said.

The APC South-South Group called on the Rivers State House of Assembly to halt all impeachment proceedings and urged the National Assembly to step in to prevent what it described as legislative overreach.

“Unchecked legislative excess in one state threatens democratic order nationwide. Rivers State belongs to its people, not to any individual or political faction, and its budget must not be treated as a private ledger for political interests,” the group added.
