APC Fires Back At Peter Obi: “You Lack Moral Standing To Preach Prudence” As Party Justifies Tinubu’s Borrowing

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a swipe at Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s borrowing policy.

Obi had recently urged professional accountants to challenge what he described as the Tinubu administration’s “reckless borrowings.”

Responding in a statement on Thursday titled “Peter Obi’s Borrowing Hypocrisy: Physician, Heal Thyself,” Lagos APC spokesman Seye Oladejo accused the former Anambra governor of double standards.

Oladejo argued that the Tinubu government’s borrowing is strategic and targeted at critical infrastructure projects in energy, transport, and other productive sectors—contrary to Obi’s portrayal.

He further asserted that Obi lacked the moral standing to lecture anyone on financial prudence, pointing to what he described as Obi’s history of unpaid pensions, weak infrastructure, and poor human development indicators as governor.

“Borrowing in itself is not reckless—it depends on purpose and prudence. Even advanced economies borrow to drive growth. Under Tinubu, borrowing is geared towards building infrastructure and stimulating productivity,” Oladejo said.

He also accused Obi of hypocrisy, noting that while campaigning, the LP flagbearer frequently traveled by private jets yet preached austerity and cost-cutting.
