“APC Is Better Than PDP, 2027 Will End Up Like 2023” – Reno Omokri Laments

Omokri highlighted the historical challenges faced by the PDP, pointing out instances where internal divisions and betrayals resulted in significant losses. In 2015, key PDP figures, including Atiku, Bukola Saraki, Kwankwaso, and Dino Melaye, defected to the APC, paving the way for the emergence of President Buhari. Fast forward to the 2023 general election, internal divisions led to the split of the party into three factions—PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP—resulting in the rise of President Tinubu.

Reacting to reports of President Tinubu’s intervention in the Rivers Crisis, a state governed by the PDP, Omokri expressed his disappointment in the lack of organizational cohesion within the PDP. He criticized the party’s failure to convene a meeting of PDP Governors to intervene in Rivers, creating a leadership vacuum. Omokri emphasized the need for internal leadership improvements within the PDP to avoid a repeat of the challenges faced in 2023.

“If I were the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party,” Omokri asserted, “as soon as the crisis in Rivers State boiled over, I would have convened a meeting of PDP Governors and sent them to intervene in Rivers. I would also have mandated them to go there physically and ensured that Nigerians saw us intervening. But by not doing so, we created a vacuum. Governor Simi Fubara looked like a destitute political orphan. The lacuna in our internal leadership was so glaring that President Bola Tinubu had to step in. It is a failure of leadership on our part.”

He questioned the benefits of PDP membership for Governor Simi Fubara, who appeared isolated during the crisis, and called for proactive steps to protect and support party members. Omokri drew a comparison with the APC, praising their history of internal solidarity and intervention when a member is threatened. He urged the PDP to address these leadership shortcomings to prevent a recurrence in 2027, emphasizing the importance of fixing internal issues to gain public trust in the party’s ability to govern Nigeria effectively.

“Being a member of a political party should come with benefits,” Omokri emphasized. “Now, what benefit does Fubara have for being a member of the PDP? How have we protected him? Even if other PDP Governors did not step in, what about the Governors of Bayelsa and Akwa-Ibom? They are neighbouring states. To an extent, they are rich, being oil-producing. What effort or gesture did they make as an act of good neighbourliness? Right now, the APC appears better organised than the PDP, and we need to step in to fix this failure in internal leadership; otherwise, 2027 will end up like 2023. Nigerians will say, ‘If they cannot fix themselves, how can they fix Nigeria?’ Am I lying?”
