Are Yoruba Not In The UK? Comedian Acapella Fires Back At Lagos Commissioner Wahab Over ‘Lagos Smell’ Controversy
Comedian Acapella has taken aim at Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, following the commissioner’s response to complaints about the living conditions and odor in Lagos.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The disagreement unfolded publicly on X (formerly Twitter) on May 17, when Wahab condemned what he called “deliberate attempts by a few individuals to damage Lagos State’s reputation.” He criticized some recent migrants to Lagos who, after a short stay, quickly criticize the city on social media, accusing them of spreading harmful narratives that undermine Lagos’ progress and spirit of inclusivity.
Wahab wrote, “It is regrettable that some who relocate from their home states… in less than a month or two, resort to disparaging the very state that has given them opportunities to succeed.” He warned against malicious efforts to tarnish a state that empowers countless lives daily. His remarks were directed at @IgumaScott, a social media user who had compared Lagos unfavorably to New York and criticized its environment.
In response, Acapella, using his verified handle @iamacapella, accused the commissioner of ethnic bias and double standards.
He questioned, “Would the truth be accepted if spoken by a Lagosian? Or is it automatically dismissed because it comes from someone from another region living in Lagos? This divide-and-rule tactic must end.”
Acapella defended the right of non-indigenes to voice dissatisfaction with Lagos, pointing out the large Yoruba community living in the UK.
He added rhetorically, “An interviewer compared Lagos to New York. He responded with Lagos’s reality. You’re here making noise… Aren’t Yoruba people living in the UK? Don’t they complain about unfavorable policies there?”
