Argentina Humiliate Burkina Faso In Record-Breaking Victory
Argentina have recorded their biggest-ever victory over an African opponent after defeating Burkina Faso 7-0 in an international friendly at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.
The three-time world champions produced a dominant performance, with Lautaro Martínez, Gianluca Prestianni, Nico Paz, Julián Álvarez, Franco Mastantuono and Giuliano Simeone all finding the net. Burkina Faso defender Moumoune Diallo also scored an own goal during the heavy defeat.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Argentina opened the scoring in the fourth minute after Martínez followed up to convert the rebound from his initially saved penalty.
Burkina Faso’s Diallo subsequently turned the ball into his own net before Prestianni, Paz and Álvarez added further goals to give Lionel Scaloni’s side a commanding 5-0 advantage before the interval.
Argentina continued their dominance after the restart, with Mastantuono and Simeone completing the scoring to seal a convincing victory.
The match also produced memorable moments for Prestianni, Mastantuono and Paz, who each registered their first goals for the senior Argentina national team.
The emphatic result surpassed Argentina’s previous record against an African opponent, which was a 5-0 friendly victory over Zambia recorded on April 1, 2026.
Burkina Faso’s preparations for the encounter were severely affected by circumstances beyond the team’s control. The African side reportedly arrived in Buenos Aires only about five hours before kick-off after a private flight from Morocco was cancelled due to technical difficulties.
The situation was further complicated by the absence of several senior players who reportedly opted not to travel because of fatigue, leaving Burkina Faso with a relatively young squad for the encounter.
Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the visitors’ preparation, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni praised Burkina Faso for making the fixture possible.
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi was unavailable for the match after arriving in Argentina on Friday. The veteran captain is expected to feature when Argentina face Benin at the Monumental Stadium on Tuesday, October 6, in what is expected to mark the formal conclusion of his 21-year international career.
