Major General Michael Onoja said criminal activities in the region have declined over the past year as a result of intensified troop deployments across the South-Eastern states, coupled with recent judicial actions against the group’s leadership.
He explained that the detention of Simon Ekpa by Finnish authorities and the continued custody of Nnamdi Kanu in Abuja have significantly weakened the group’s operational capacity, limiting its ability to organise and execute attacks.
According to Onoja, the combination of aggressive military operations and court rulings has led to a noticeable drop in crimes and violent incidents across the region.
He noted that the group’s capabilities have been severely eroded, recalling that criminal elements previously targeted lightly defended checkpoints and security posts, often killing personnel and seizing weapons to sustain further violence.
The military, he said, remains committed to maintaining the ongoing operations to consolidate the security gains, safeguard lives and property, and prevent criminal groups from regrouping in the South-East.
