ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike At LAUTECH Over Unpaid Allowances, Promotion Arrears

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike over unpaid allowances, outstanding promotion arrears and delays in implementing the December 2025 agreement between the union and the Federal Government.

The industrial action began on Thursday, October 29, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management to address the lecturers’ outstanding demands.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the union is demanding the implementation of the December 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, including the payment of consequential arrears dating back to January 2026.

The lecturers are also seeking the immediate settlement of outstanding Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) and promotion arrears covering the period from 2013 to 2025.

ASUU alleged that LAUTECH’s Governing Council had formally approved the implementation of the agreement but accused the university management of repeatedly citing financial constraints as the reason for the delay.

Beyond the financial demands, the union is calling for a review of the composition of the university’s Staff Disciplinary Committee and the reconstitution of the Committee of Provosts and Deans. It also wants concerns surrounding transparency in the institution’s electronic voting system to be addressed.

In a statement jointly signed by the branch chairperson, Professor Olujimi Dada, and the secretary, Dr Soji Arinola, the union said it had pursued several formal and informal channels of dialogue in an attempt to resolve the disagreements.

However, the union maintained that its efforts had failed to produce a satisfactory resolution, leaving it with no alternative but to embark on an indefinite industrial action.

ASUU called on its members to remain united and committed throughout the strike, while cautioning them against acting on unauthorised information or directives.

The union emphasised that only instructions and announcements issued directly by the branch chairperson, Professor Olujimi Dada, should be considered authentic during the industrial action.

The strike adds to the challenges facing Nigeria’s university system, where disputes over funding, staff welfare and the implementation of agreements have repeatedly strained relations between university authorities and academic unions.
