Atiku: I Could Have Solved The Crisis If I Was Chairman Or Secretary Nigerinas React

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has revealed why he was unable to resolve the lingering crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In an interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku said his efforts were frustrated because the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) allegedly used some PDP leaders to destabilize the party and weaken the opposition.

He explained that if he had been the PDP Chairman or National Secretary—or if those offices were held by people aligned with him—he would have taken decisive steps to fix the crisis.

“As the days went by, PDP’s internal crisis kept deepening, and hopes of resolving it faded. Some senior members were clearly being influenced by the APC government, judging by their utterances and actions,” he said.

Atiku stressed that his interest is not born out of desperation for power, but from a desire to rescue Nigeria. He pointed out that this was one of the reasons behind the formation of the ADC, which, according to him, is already working to strengthen its state and local government structures ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, Atiku lamented that the country was still far from the vision of its founding fathers. He criticized President Bola Tinubu, accusing his administration of plunging Nigerians into hardship due to the “hasty and unplanned” removal of fuel subsidy in 2023.

“When I was Vice President, we proposed removing the subsidy in four phases, with stakeholders fully engaged. But Tinubu’s government removed it at once without measures to cushion the impact, and that has only brought unprecedented poverty and suffering,” Atiku stated.
