Atiku described El-Rufai’s continued detention, particularly as Muslims prepare to celebrate Eid al-Kabir, as unfair, disturbing, and difficult to justify.

In a statement released on Friday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the former vice president expressed concern that state institutions may be used to target perceived political opponents.

He said the situation was politically sensitive and inconsistent with democratic values, justice, and respect for human rights.

According to the statement, Eid al-Kabir is a season associated with sacrifice, compassion, forgiveness, and family unity, adding that no government should deny a citizen freedom without lawful justification, especially under circumstances that may suggest political persecution.

Atiku stressed that regardless of political disagreements or changing alliances, El-Rufai remains entitled to constitutional rights, including liberty, dignity, and due process.

He warned that democracy should not be used as a tool to silence dissent, settle political disputes, or intimidate opponents through state institutions.

The former vice president also called on the Federal Government and Kaduna State authorities to publicly explain the legal grounds for El-Rufai’s detention.

He argued that if there is a legitimate legal basis for the action, Nigerians deserve transparency. Otherwise, he said, the development could deepen fears that democratic governance is drifting toward intolerance and authoritarian tendencies.

Atiku further noted that the Eid period should encourage mercy, reconciliation, and peace, insisting that there was no reason to keep El-Rufai away from his family without clear legal justification.

He concluded by urging all relevant authorities to rise above political divisions and act in the interest of justice, national unity, and peace.
