Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in 2023, has indicated that his future in the 2027 general elections rests in the hands of his party members. Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Atiku emphasized that it’s premature to determine his presidential aspirations for 2027 at this stage.
He emphasized that he would defer to the collective decision of party members, particularly if they opt to allocate the PDP’s presidential ticket to the South East region. Atiku reiterated his stance, stating, “I’ve consistently maintained that if our party members reach a consensus in favor of the Southeast producing the candidate, we would all rally behind it. Similarly, if our party leadership agrees, then that would be the course.”
Atiku also discussed his recent encounter with Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), hinting at the potential for collaborations leading up to the 2027 elections. He viewed their meeting as a positive step toward fostering democratic principles in Nigeria and suggested the likelihood of alliances forming between opposition parties.
While Atiku dismissed speculations regarding the inability to reach a consensus candidate during their meeting, he refrained from disclosing specific timelines for solidifying any alliance. He emphasized their commitment to upholding democratic values and enhancing governance, underscoring their role in championing the democratic process.
