In a statement released by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, in Abuja, Atiku condemned the deployment of soldiers to Kano by the Federal Government, labeling it as a threat to the peace and security of the state. He emphasized that such actions were in violation of the 1999 Constitution.
According to the statement, “In performing their constitutional duties of lawmaking, the Kano State House of Assembly passed the amended Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 in accordance with the provision of Section 4 of the 1999 Constitution as Amended.” The Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, subsequently signed the bill into law, repealing the 2019 version that divided the ancient Kano Emirate into five.
Atiku expressed surprise over the early morning arrival of the former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, at the Nasarawa Palace of the Kano Emirate, backed by federal support. This move occurred while the reappointed Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, was at the Gidan Dabo, the main residence of the Emir of Kano.
Highlighting the deployment of soldiers in this context, Atiku criticized the federal government for intervening in extra-constitutional matters, stating that it undermines the integrity of the Nigerian military.
“We need to remind the Tinubu administration that Kano State is known for peace and harmony spanning thousands of years, and any attempt to destabilize the peace of the Land of Commerce shall be resisted,” Atiku asserted. He emphasized that Kano had maintained peace even after the dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2020.
Atiku concluded by unequivocally stating that if law and order were to break down in Kano State, particularly in Kano Municipal, the federal government should bear responsibility. He viewed the security cover provided to the former Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, as an invitation to anarchy and urged against any actions that could disrupt the peace of the region.
