Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, has undeniably transformed into a “political gadfly.” His role as a “perennial candidate” seems to prioritize self-promotion over actual electoral victories. Ironically, his recent proposal for collaboration with Peter Obi of the LP and Kwankwaso of the NNPP is currently a solitary voice in the wilderness. Atiku, who played a pivotal role in triggering the crisis within the PDP by manipulating the system to secure the presidential ticket for the North, to the detriment of the South, finds himself in a rather lonely position.

It is worth noting that Atiku’s numerous attempts at the presidency, which span six elections, have all ended in failure. He has hopped from one political party to another, including the Social Democratic Party, Action Congress, All Progressives Congress, and the People’s Democratic Party. Each time, he fell short of securing the presidency, with the likes of Yar’Adua, Buhari, and Jonathan emerging victorious.

Atiku’s recent move to join forces with Peter Obi and Kwankwaso appears belated and may be seen as a desperate attempt to create a united front against President Tinubu. This alliance could be geared towards launching an early smear campaign against the incumbent president to gain favor with voters in preparation for the 2027 elections.

In contrast, President Tinubu appears to be secure and untroubled in his leadership role. His influence extends beyond Nigeria to the international stage, showcasing a level of stability and confidence. Nigerians can expect more political theatrics as Atiku leverages the popularity of Peter Obi to mount a comeback, all while President Tinubu continues to consolidate his position.

In the world of Nigerian politics, the drama is far from over, and Atiku’s bid for relevance seems to be driven by a desire for personal glory rather than a genuine commitment to the people or his party’s interests. As the political landscape evolves, time will tell whether his latest endeavor will bear fruit.
