Speaking in an interview with The Punch on Wednesday in Yola, the state capital, PDP state chairman Tahir Shehu said Atiku’s departure is widely seen by many party leaders as a blessing and a major win for the party as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
According to Shehu, Adamawa has long been a PDP stronghold, and Atiku’s resignation poses no threat to the party’s influence, given the solid support it enjoys from the electorate.
He recalled that despite past internal crises, the PDP reclaimed power in 2019 and has remained in firm control under Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, positioning it as a formidable force in upcoming elections.
“Adamawa is the political base of the PDP. Atiku himself became governor under our party in 1999, which paved the way for his elevation to Vice President,” Shehu said. “The only time PDP lost the state was in 2015, during President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure, when a candidate was imposed from Abuja. That decision was rejected at the polls to show that Adamawa voters can’t be dictated to from the capital.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Luka Tumba, a PDP chieftain from Michika LGA, described Atiku’s exit as divine intervention, claiming the former VP has consistently been a destabilizing figure during elections.
“He’s always been a stumbling block to PDP’s success. The people of Adamawa haven’t felt his political impact since his vice presidency,” Tumba stated. “Ironically, it was President Muhammadu Buhari who constructed the road to his hometown, Jada, while Atiku focused on building private businesses around the globe. We see this moment as an answered prayer and plan to hold a thanksgiving for his timely departure.”
