Backdoor Politics Sparks Drama: Shaibu And Omobayo Clash Over Edo Representation At Former Deputy Governors’ Forum

The confrontation erupted when Omobayo was introduced as the former deputy governor at the Abuja event on Tuesday, prompting Shaibu to object publicly.

According to Channels Television, the disagreement caused a brief uproar as both men argued over the legitimacy of their claims.

Shaibu criticized the introduction, insisting that Omobayo was never properly elected and was instead “brought in through the back door.” He emphasized that a court had declared his removal illegal, meaning the office was never vacant. “He brought him in through the back door,” Shaibu stated.

Omobayo, on his part, described the incident as nearly a national disgrace, saying he had tried to remain composed. He called on Shaibu, whom he still regards as an elder brother, to accept the court ruling as an unfortunate reality. “I never made myself deputy governor. The incident is almost a national disgrace,” Omobayo said.

For context, Philip Shaibu was impeached as Edo State Deputy Governor under Godwin Obaseki in April 2024 and replaced by Omobayo Godwins. A court later ruled Shaibu’s impeachment unlawful and reinstated him.
