Bamise Gets Justice! HURIWA Commends Court Over Death Penalty For Murderer

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has commended the court’s decision to sentence to death the convicted murderer of 22-year-old fashion designer, Bamise Ayanwola, describing the ruling as a just and fitting response to the horrific crime.

HURIWA expressed satisfaction with the judgment, calling the death penalty the most appropriate legal consequence for what it termed a “gruesome and barbaric act” committed by the BRT bus driver responsible for Bamise’s death.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group also lauded the earlier capital punishment handed down to the husband of the late gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, by Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the Abuja High Court.

The rights organization emphasized that individuals who take innocent lives must face the full force of the law, stating that legal executions of such offenders are essential in preserving justice and deterring similar crimes.

Although the case in Lagos took considerable time to resolve, HURIWA expressed relief that justice ultimately prevailed. It described the court’s ruling as firm, fair, and necessary for a crime so heinous and unforgivable.

“This verdict reflects the value of Bamise’s life, a young woman simply returning home from her lawful work, whose journey ended tragically at the hands of a remorseless killer,” the group stated.

HURIWA urged the judiciary to ensure that any appeal against the death sentence is resolved promptly, warning that prolonged delays could compromise justice. “Bamise’s murder must not be forgotten, and justice must not be denied by delay,” the statement concluded.
