This significant expenditure comes at the expense of funding for critical sectors. The budget for rehabilitating hospitals and health centers is only N1.5 billion, while public school rehabilitation is set at N3.9 billion. Additionally, just N1.5 billion is earmarked for road repairs. Notably, the highest budget item for repairs is N4.3 billion for residential buildings, which still falls short of the N5.4 billion designated for celebrations.

Further analysis indicates that N1.5 billion has also been budgeted for water facilities, despite the alarming statistic that 95% of households in Bayelsa lack access to sanitary facilities and 78% lack clean drinking water.

The state’s unemployment rate stands at 36.7% as of 2022, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, highlighting the pressing need for a review of governance costs. Recent reports also indicated that the state plans to spend N420 million on Christmas decorations and a praise night.
