In a statement issued late Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation, and Strategy, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, the government strongly condemned the violence and urged that those responsible be swiftly identified and prosecuted.
The statement stressed the importance of a prompt police investigation to ensure accountability for the incident.
It partly read, “The government expressed deep concern over the unfortunate event, noting it was not unexpected as the rally organisers had earlier warned that ‘the good, the bad, and the ugly’ would attend.”
Highlighting the disruption of what was meant to be a peaceful gathering, which instead descended into violence with several injuries reported, the government demanded immediate law enforcement intervention to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Furthermore, the government noted that the rally violated political activity regulations set out in the Electoral Act and enforced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), pointing out that it was held within a religious institution.
It warned political groups against using religious venues for partisan activities, stating that any religious organisation found breaching the law would face appropriate sanctions.
The government reiterated its commitment to preserving peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that Bayelsa State remains a safe environment for all residents.
