Behind Closed Doors: How Tinubu Is Securing Northern Support For Landmark Tax Bills!
President Bola Tinubu has intensified efforts to secure the support of northern elites and political leaders for the passage of key tax reform bills currently facing significant opposition.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Introduced to the National Assembly in October 2024, the proposed laws include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill.
Presidency sources reveal that Tinubu has adopted a mix of private consultations and informal channels to address concerns raised by stakeholders. A senior official, speaking anonymously to Punch, stated, “President Tinubu has been engaging northern elites individually and in groups, even before the holidays, to ensure their concerns are heard.”
Another insider confirmed that the President is leveraging “back channels” to ease opposition, saying, “He is using every available avenue to resolve the contentious aspects of the bills.”
Despite these efforts, northern governors remain firm in their resistance, demanding the bills be withdrawn for further consultation. They argue the proposals could negatively impact their regions and stifle economic growth.
The tax reform bills, aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s tax administration and boosting revenue collection, have ignited heated debate. Critics warn the changes could result in higher taxes and financial strain for citizens. However, the federal government defends the measures as essential for diversifying revenue sources and reducing reliance on oil.
