Benin City Court Sentences 15 Individuals For Online Fraud

Fifteen individuals involved in internet fraud have been convicted and sentenced by the Edo State High Court in Benin City. Their conviction followed their admission of guilt to charges of obtaining money through deception and possession of fraudulent documents. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought the charges against them.

Deniran Emmanuel Edafe, for instance, was found in possession of documents containing false pretenses. Upon pleading guilty, the prosecution urged the court to proceed with conviction and sentencing. Defense counsels, however, appealed for leniency, citing remorse on the part of the defendants.

Justice Efe Ikponmwonba sentenced Evans, Favour, Godspower, Ekene, and Seyi to three years imprisonment or a fine of N100,000 each. Mudiaga received a two-year sentence or a fine of N200,000.

On another day, Justice Itsueli handed down similar sentences to Joseph, Ojeugba, Akpojaro, Bright, Aboh, Ovie, and Orede. Mathew Ese and Jarret received two-year sentences or a fine of N100,000 each.

Additionally, Justice Ikponmwonba ordered the forfeiture of proceeds of crime, including monetary sums and vehicles, while Justice Itsueli similarly ordered the forfeiture of vehicles.

Furthermore, all convicts were ordered to forfeit their electronic devices, bank balances, and other instruments of crime to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
