According to Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s Director of Public Affairs, the towers had been severely damaged, with critical components removed earlier in November. The damage was discovered by TCN linesmen during a routine patrol. Despite the extensive destruction, Mbah assured that TCN engineers had already begun repair work to restore the infrastructure.
“A total of 31 towers were affected in this incident,” Mbah stated. “Engineers from the Benin Sub-Region are working to repair the towers and prevent any collapse that could disrupt the bulk power supply.”
Mbah also revealed that the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV line, which had previously been targeted and was under repair, was once again attacked by vandals.
The TCN spokesperson called on security agencies and local communities to help protect power infrastructure, emphasizing that vigilantes had been deployed to secure the affected sites during ongoing repairs. She warned that these incidents highlight the urgent need to tackle the escalating problem of vandalism and theft, which has severely impacted Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
“These criminal activities are hindering the growth and stability of the national grid,” Mbah said. “TCN urges the public to support efforts to combat these crimes, as we continue to bolster measures to protect critical power infrastructure. We appeal to security forces and local communities to remain vigilant and assist in safeguarding these vital assets.
